International Jazzfestival Münster 2017

A kaleidoscope of timbres, formations, unique personal styles – the 26th edition of the International Jazz Festival features many facets of contemporary jazz.

The artistic director Fritz Schmücker has composed a high-contrast programme from the almost endless range of jazz music. In its selection, this programme follows the typical festival maxim to show lesser-known and predictable, but rather surprising acts – beyond stereotypes and arbitrariness. Thus, almost half of the 17 concerts with musicians from 15 countries premiere in Germany. A headline might be jazz from Europe, though not exclusively, but very influential. In addition, the programme follows several small thematic lines: for example three formations headed by female drummers as well as exciting interpretations of music from great jazz heroes and the American Songbook, and old acquaintances introducing their new bands – just to name a few.

The festival which was established in 1979 by the students' union executive committee of the university of Münster is organized by the Cultural Office of the Municipality of Münster. It was made possible chiefly through the generous commitment of our long-time and new festival partners (see title page), paired with a special contribution from Sparda-Bank Münster.

Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), partner of the festival from its inception, broadcasts live on Friday (January 6th, 2017) on WDR 3. The WDR will also broadcast recordings over the course of the year.
